Reverberation is a phenomenon characterized by the persistence of sound in a closed or semi-closed space after an acoustic source has been interrupted; the cause is the reflection (in greater or lesser proportion) of acoustic waves:
- on the walls constituting the limits of the considered space (floor, walls, roof or ceiling)
- on the surfaces of equipment (possibly industrial), furniture, even bodily e.g. when it comes to an audience
From the reverberation results for premises a greater or lesser acoustic quality, in relation to their destination, with regard to:
- speech intelligibility e.g. classrooms and training rooms, meeting rooms
- conditions for broadcasting music e.g. in specialized places
- discretion and confidentiality (e.g. in an open space, in a dining room)
- amplification of ambient sound levels: everywhere, including where this can cause an undesirable excess of sound to be heard, be at the origin of a detestable sound environment invloving stress, fatigue for young and old, or even increase the risks of auditory trauma during repeated exposure to excessive sound levels
The reduction of the reverberation in a room by the means of materials absorbing sound is an action frequently implemented in the context of noise control:
- protection of workers against noise: acoustic correction of work spaces to reduce reverberation
- limitation of noise emissions in energy sector: limitation of amplification of sound levels inside technical rooms, and therefore, all other things being equal, limitation of noise transmitted outside enclosures
- acoustic comfort in buildings:noise limitation in educational and health establishments, in hotels, sports halls, other living areas such as restaurants, offices, meeting rooms and rooms for amplified music broadcast
